Notes: 我 is used as a first person pronoun in both modern (NCCED '我' 1) and literary Chinese. For example, in modern Chinese: 我比你岁数大点 'I am a little older than you.' (Lao She, 2003, p. 174) In literary Chinese, 我 was used as a first person pronoun as early as preclassical times in the Shang Dynasty (Pulleyblank 1995, p. 76). 我 is the fifth most frequently used word in the Beijing Language Institute's 1985 frequency wordlist (Ho, 2002, '我').
