Notes: 雖 (simplified 虽) is the main concessive function word in Literary Chinese. It indicates that the proposition of a sentence is true in any case (Pulleyblank 1995, p. 156). For example, 雖大國，必畏之矣。'even great kingdoms will be constrained to stand in awe of him' (Mengzi: 3.4/17/22, translation by Legge)
